Solid beech timberboard three layers: what is it?

Beech is a hardwood species with little to no knots. Steamed beech wood has a whitish to pinkish colour that can discolour when exposed to daylight. When you sand the sheet, the original wood colour will return, and this is strongly recommended before finishing the panel with stain, lacquer or oil. Beech has little grain, and the grain pattern that is visible is generally even and calm. Beech has a straight, sometimes wavy thread and a fine grain. This type of wood also has an even structure with little grain pattern. The beech wood in our assortment is steamed, which gives the wood a soft pink and relatively even color. Perfect when you are looking for a wood type with a subtle appearance. An beech board three-layer means that the panel consists of three crosswise glued layers. The top layer is a veneer layer consisting of one piece of solid wood, the core of the sheet is composed of small solid slats of the same type of wood.

Wood can be subdivided into the categories of hardwood and soft wood. Hardwood comes from deciduous trees and softwood from coniferous trees. Beech is a light-coloured deciduous wood type. Deciduous wood, or hardwood, is characterised as a hard and strong sheet material.

Beech wood has an antibacterial effect and is odourless. It is important to always properly treat the beech right away. Sand the sheet and then finish it with varnish, stain or oil. Beech is not suitable for outdoor applications, please take this into account. In addition, just like any other solid wood species, beech warps with temperature differences and when used in humid areas. For this reason, always take warping into account with solid boards.

Beech board rustic is more robust and coarser than beech timberboard. This is because the material has greater colour nuances. Each slat clearly has its own appearance and characteristics. For example, the grain pattern of the wood is visibly present on the slats in various motifs. Perfect for making rural, distinctive furniture. The wood used for these sheets is the heartwood of the beech tree. The heartwood is the strongest part of the tree and is characterised by its hardness.

These solid boards are composed of three layers which are glued together crosswise. The two top layers are of high quality. The 5 mm thick top layers consist of falling wide sections of approx. 80 to 140 mm. The 10 mm thick core makes it a sturdy and stable whole. The core consists of the same wood as the top layers. In the core, all remaining material is processed that is not suitable for the visible sides: too short and too narrow wood, sapwood and other defects. The whole trunk is used, leaving almost no residual waste. Due to the 3-layer structure, this type of board is the most stable of all solid glued boards.

The direction of the wood grain

Timberboard has a visible wood grain. The wood grain pattern always runs in the longitudinal direction. When sawing the sheet, we maintain that the longitudinal dimension is also the longitudinal direction of the wood grain. So be careful when filling in the measurements, so that the flames of the wood grain all run in the right direction!

Available thicknesses of solid beech timberboard

Solid timberboards can be ordered in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thickness(es) are available: 20 mm.

Machining solid beech timberboard

Machining beech wood is quite easy. It is a hard wood type but easy to machine. This is partly due to the limited splintering of this this wood type. Because it is a light, hard wood species, the use of sharp tools is highly recommended. With tools that are dull or not sharp enough, burns can occur. The use of stainless steel screws instead of iron screws is also strongly recommended to prevent discolouration of the wood

Always sand solid wooden sheets with a fine grain before you start working with it. Beech does not splinter but pre-drilling is necessary. Beech, like any other solid wood species, can warp in humid conditions and in varying temperatures. Therefore, treat the material with a lacquer or stain as soon as possible so that you can enjoy it for as long as possible. Read here more about the quality of timberboards.

Specific applications of solid beech timberboard

These boards can be used for various carpentry work such as window frames, stairs, furniture, kitchen worktops or tables. Beech is ideal for use in the kitchen because it is non-toxic wood. Because of this, we often see this sheet as a cutting board, chopping block or kitchen or counter top. The board is not durable and the interior is glued. As a result, this sheet material can only be used indoors.
