In this project, Hidde demonstrates how he made a functional rack look nicer with a custom-cut timber panel. For this project, he chose oak timber panel 40mm.

Description by Hidde

I've created a top for my 19" rack. The original rack didn't have a top, and since it's in my living room, I found it important to make it a bit more appealing. Additionally, it's more practical now because I can put things on it (in this case, speakers).

How I made this project

First, I ordered an oak wooden plank (approximately 60.0 x 60.0 cm). Then, I finely sanded it and finished it with oil. I mounted the wooden plank using 8 bolts. These are securely fastened into the wood with threaded inserts. The holes were already in the original frame, making assembly very easy. The 19" rack I used is the 18U open frame with 4 uprights from Startech: https://www.startech.com/nl-nl/server-beheer/4postrack18u

Dimensions of my DIY project

60.5 cm x 60cm x 94cm (L x W x H)
