How ideal is it to be able to neatly store your books in the study room? Roderik therefore made a flexible shelving unit from Birch Plywood. He ordered the sheet material from us and was quickly able to get started to create a simple, but handy shelving unit. Now his study room is neatly organized!

Description by Roderik

For our study room, we made a flexible shelving unit to store (especially) books. The rails make it possible to move shelves around.

How I made this project

First, I measured the dimensions of the irregular wall and made a drawing of how I wanted to design the shelving unit. We live in a 1930s house where straight walls don't really exist, so that requires some time and thought.

Initially, I bought white f-rails and then sprayed them gold to give the unit a vintage look. After the rails were thoroughly dry, I hung them at regular intervals from each other and from the surrounding walls. I also sprayed the corresponding shelf supports gold and used them to get the rails level on the wall.

Only after the rails were attached to the wall did I order the dimensions of the shelves. It's safer to measure that when the rails are already on the wall, rather than doing it beforehand. If the measurements turn out differently, you'll end up with the wrong dimensions for your shelves. I chose Birch Plywood 18mm, because I like the layered look and it's a strong board. I finished these with a transparent, matte lacquer for protection. I still have some spare shelves in the cabinet in case I want to vary, or need more or less space.

Dimensions of my DIY project

The beauty of this project is that the dimensions don't really matter, because you can customize it to your own preferences. In our case, the widest width (at the top) is about 230.0 cm. The bottom part has a width of about 140.0 cm. The
