Transform your space with a built-in wardrobe and a folding bed
As soon as you open the door to Madelon's room, you enter a world of clever space-saving. This custom-made built-in wardrobe, constructed entirely from custom-cut MDF Natural from TOSIZE.ie, not only offers a wealth of storage space but also features a surprising twist: a handy fold-down bed! This project shows how a small space problem can be transformed into a tidy and functional oasis.
A Functional Design
The wall of cabinets spans the entire height of the room, with open alcoves at the top perfect for decorative items or extra storage. In the center, the cabinets are hidden behind sleekly finished MDF Natural doors. The secret weapon? A folding bed that seamlessly integrates into the design, ready to comfortably accommodate any sleepover.
Picture Perfect in any Room
Inspired by Scandinavian style, this built-in wardrobe makes the most of the natural light from the skylight. The light tones of the MDF Natural create an airy look that seamlessly complements the wooden walls and ceiling. Whether you're expecting guests or simply need extra storage, this wardrobe will always come in handy.

Step by step guide
Preparation
- Measure the space you want to fill with a wardrobe! I wanted it to be room-wide and room-high around a doorframe, and level with my wall bed. For that "en-suite wardrobe" feel!
- Draw your optimal compartment layout and grab the calculator. I first designed the "skeleton" by extending the lines of the doorframe and bed, thus arriving at the correct dimensions for the cabinet fronts and doors. I had it cut to size from 18mm MDF so that the whole thing would be sturdy enough and I could later paint it to match my bed.
Montage
- Assemble the frame. Mount the frame to the wall to distribute the weight evenly.
- Place the front moldings against the front of the frame. For the upper cabinets, I cut the fronts like arches to create cozy alcoves. I don't think this is offered (yet) by opmaatzagen.nl, so I used the jigsaw. Who knows, maybe in the future!
- Using a template, I drilled holes in the doors for the hinges. For this cabinet, I chose inset hinges so the doors would sit flush with the rest of the cabinet wall. Attach the hinges and place the doors at the correct height in the cabinet.
Finish
- The finishing is still in progress; I used MDF primer as the first coat and am now looking for the right color!
