Self-made and customized projects are often a great (and more enjoyable) alternative to standard furniture or products from the hardware store. This project proves that you can realize very beautiful custom projects with custom-cut sheet material, without necessarily being more expensive. Ingmar demonstrates how he created a large and beautiful floating desk using cut-to-size pine timber panel.

Ingmar's Description

A large floating desk with a thickness of 28 mm. Finished with a narrower slat of 7.0 cm so that you don't see the support structure.

How I Made This Project

Inspired by a similar project. A wooden timber panel of this size was only available at the hardware store in standard size and difficult to transport. Therefore, we ordered one timber panel of 74.0 cm wide and one of 7.0 cm wide for finishing. We attached the timber panel to fir beams (44 by 69mm) and glued and screwed the smaller plank to it. This makes the desk look extra thick and very sturdy. Attaching the beams (level) takes some figuring out, but measuring is key! Expansion plugs were ideal (60 or 80mm long was sufficient here). Make sure to drill deep enough with a good concrete drill to prevent bending or damaging the expansion plugs ;). The top is screwed from under the beams with 5x80mm torx screws. Iron corner brackets were used for extra strength. The smaller plank was glued to the underside of the top and reinforced with smaller corner brackets and screws. The result turned out very nicely, and the desk is at a beautiful height of 75cm!
