In this DIY project, Tim shows how he made a beautiful built-in wardrobe with custom-sawn MDF. By ordering the MDF to size, he was able to start his project immediately. Read more about his approach and experience below.

Description of Tim

We wanted to turn the long wall in our bedroom into a cupboard wall that fit exactly. Because the facade had two depths, this was quite a challenge. We chose to make a cupboard with 5 shelves and three doors against the shallow part and two hanging cupboards with shelves and two doors each against the deep part. When measuring and drawing, it is important to take the thickness of the panels into account, in our case 18mm primed MDF panels. In addition, it is advisable to allow a margin of 2-3mm for the doors to allow for opening. If your doors are too tight together, they will no longer open.

How I made this project

On the floor we had a frame with plinth cut to size where the blocks of the cabinets could be placed above. Once this spirit level was attached, we screwed the cabinet blocks together and then placed them against each other on the frame. Doors measuring 45.0 x 203.0 cm with 4 hinges attached each. Finally, a lick of paint (Ral 7047) over the pre-primed 18mm MDF panels and the cast iron knobs were the finishing touch.
