In this DIY project, Tristan shows how he made custom risers for his open staircase. By ordering custom MDF panels, this job was a lot easier to tackle. Read more about his experience below.

Description of Tristan

Our staircase from the first to second floor, or the attic, was an open staircase. We wanted to close this. This is in connection with a possible staircase renovation in the future and the safety of our small children. It also prevents dust from falling between the steps and can insulate against noise and possible heat loss. It's something we've had on our to-do list for a while.

How I made this project

I measured the sizes. I made the width a little wider and the height was all the same. I increased the height for each step by 1 cm as the stairs are never completely equal. Once all the planks arrived, I shortened the length with a miter saw to make the risers fit. I drilled diagonal holes in the risers with a wolfcraft drill set so that I could screw them to the steps above. See picture.
Tips:
-Give the planks a mark when you order them, so you can recognize each plank by a sticker.
-Use polymer kit between the risers and the steps to prevent creaking.
