Solid mahogany timber board: what is it?

Mahogany is a tropical hardwood species, originating from Africa, and is therefore often used in luxury yachts. The grain of the wood is quite straight, but sometimes also crosswise. If you treat the wood well, it will last for years. Mahogany has a pinkish red colour that fades to a warm, red-brown look. The wood has a beautiful golden appearance, which is why it is often used to create a luxurious and classic look. Mahogany sheets are also called a mahogany furniture board or timber board, although it is not finished on the sheet edges as standard.

Quality grading for timber board

Timber board comes in different qualities. This does not mean that the sheet is more or less strong, it indicates the quality of the appearance of the sheet. The quality can be found in the product properties. More information about the visual grading below.

The solid mahogany boards in our range are of high quality. This can be deduced from the visual grading. The visual grading is indicated by letters, often a combination of two letters with a separator between them. This can be found in the product name or the product properties. The first letter represents the top of the sheet, the second for the bottom or backside. A/B thus describes the top and bottom of the sheet. A is the best visual grading a wood species can have, with the sheet being almost knotless. The underside has visual grading B, which means that the underside can have a somewhat coarser appearance.

Lumber Quality Indication
A Uniform colour. No knots and no heartwood allowed.
B Small colour nuances permitted. Tassels and heartwood may be present.
C Large colour nuances permissible. Tassels and heartwood are present.

The solid sheet material is made up of slats. Slats are small wooden planks made entirely of pure wood. To be able to make a sheet of a larger size, several slats are combined into one large sheet. This results in a very solid and strong sheet. Keep in mind that no slat has the same appearance. The wood structure and colour of each slat is unique and can therefore also deviate from the image. Our solid sheets are interior bonded, which means that the material can only be used indoors.

The direction of the wood grain

Timber board has a visible wood grain. The wood grain pattern always runs in the longitudinal direction. When sawing the sheet, we maintain that the longitudinal dimension is also the longitudinal direction of the wood grain. So be careful when filling in the measurements, so that the flames of the wood grain all run in the right direction!

Available thicknesses of solid mahogany timber board

Solid timber boards can be ordered in various thicknesses. You can easily specify your desired thickness during the ordering process. This way you can be sure that the sheet material meets your requirements: both the size and thickness of the material. The following thicknesses are available: 26 mm and 40 mm.

Machining solid mahogany timber board

Mahogany is easy to machine. However, it is good to take the crosswise structure into account during machining. Use sharp tools and pre-drill the wood when you are going to assemble it. Once you have the sheet material in your home, we recommend that you first sand it with a fine grain (at least 180), so that the true colour of the wood appears. Use stainless-steel screws instead of iron when bonding with metal to prevent discolouration of the wood.

Finish the sheet with a lacquer or varnish, this way you will enjoy your sheet material the longest. Read all processing instructions of timber board here.

Specific applications of solid mahogany timber board

Mahogany is moderately durable. This board can be used indoors or in covered areas, pay attention to the bonding of the board! Even though mahogany can be used outdoors, solid sheets are often bonded indoors. This eliminates the possibility of using the wood in humid areas or outdoors. Because of its chic appearance, mahogany is often used in the interiors of luxury yachts. The material can also be used for furniture such as tables, desks, dressers and wall shelves.
